Primary Focus
I am fascinated by why people do the things they do. Trying to figure this out ultimately led me to become a therapist, a job where a lot of my day-to-day is understanding underlying motivations. My approach is based on curiosity and acceptance. In my work with patients, I strive to create a space where deep trauma, loss, and disappointment can coexist with moments of laughter—often within the same conversation.
Therapy can look different depending on what you want and need. Therapy can help unpack and process traumatic experiences, generate understanding, improve relationships, change behaviors, or provide emotional support. My goal is to work together with you, whatever your plan for therapy is, to help you get there in a way that feels alive, like we’re getting to the important, real stuff.
Before I became a therapist, and even now, outside of my clinical work, I am still trying to understand motivation. I first entered college as a history major, then went to philosophy, then to biology, and finally landed in psychology, which seemed to blend all the above. I just liked a good intro class and trying to figure things out from first principles.
My professional life now is a blend of providing therapy, teaching classes for other therapists, and research. I am the author of many peer-reviewed journal articles and presented at conferences around the world. In my research, I focus on how therapists can attune to each patient’s unique story, using that understanding as the foundation for meaningful change.
What to expect in therapy with me:
On the therapy side, I’ve been working in mental health for a long time. Every job I’ve had has been in mental health, except for a brief stint as a fry cook at the Burger Haus. I worked for a few years in hospitals and a locked psychiatric facility after college, which helped me decide to go to graduate school for my Ph.D.
After that, I became licensed in 2017 and have been in private practice ever since. My training and experience have been split working with adults as well as children, adolescents, and families. Now, I also supervise some of the clinicians here at the San Francisco Therapy Group.
